WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department said Friday the U.S. attorney who oversaw key prosecutions of President Donald Trump’s allies and an investigation of his personal lawyer Rudy Giulani had left his job, but he insisted he had not resigned and his ongoing investigations would continue. Attorney General William Barr said in a statement that Geoffrey S. Berman was stepping down as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. The office is one of the nation’s top districts, trying major mob cases and terror cases over the years. But Berman said in a statement later that he’d learned he was stepping down from “press reports.”

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A gathering of supporters and detractors of President Donald Trump is growing larger with occasional verbal clashes ahead of Trump's rally in Tulsa. The Oklahoma Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request to require everyone attending Trump’s weekend rally this weekend to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing inside the arena to guard against the spread of the coronavirus. Meanwhile, Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynumrescinded a day-old curfew that was put in place ahead of Saturday night's rally. Tens of thousands are expected to attend the rally or hang out outside of the arena.

UNDATED (AP) — South Korea has reported its largest 24-hour increase in confirmed coronavirus cases in about three weeks amid an upward trend in new infections. Officials said Saturday that the 67 additional cases raise the country’s total to 12,373, with 280 deaths. The 67 cases is the largest daily increase since South Korea reported 79 cases on May 28. Officials say 31 of the new cases came from outside the country and the other 36 were locally transmitted. South Korea is seeking to contain a spike in fresh virus transmissions since early May when it eased social distancing rules. Most of the new cases have been reported in the densely populated Seoul metropolitan area, where about half of the country’s 51 million people reside.

UNDATED (AP) — The Rev. Al Sharpton took on President Donald Trump directly while speaking before several hundred people gathered at the site of the white-on-Black rampage 99 years ago in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He referred to Trump’s tweet Friday morning of a warning about any “lowlifes” showing up against his rally Saturday. Sharpton said “It’s lowlifes that shoot unarmed people, Mr. President,” Sharpton said. He also challenged Trump’s lasting campaign slogan of “Make America Great Again” by asking when America was great for everyone.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Protesters in North Carolina’s capital have pulled down parts of a Confederate monument and hanged one of the toppled statues from a light post. Demonstrators used a strap to pull down two statues that were part of a larger obelisk near the state capitol in downtown Raleigh. They then used a rope to hang one of the statues by its neck from a light post. Earlier in the day, hundreds of demonstrators had marched through downtown Raleigh and Durham to protest against police brutality and to celebrate Juneteenth. Numerous Confederate statues have been vandalized or torn down across the South following the death of George Floyd.
