STAR POINT, Carbon County — A man is dead and another is hospitalized after a rollover crash in rural Carbon County.

Because the injured man couldn’t find his cell phone after the accident and due to the lack of reliable cell service in the area, first responders weren’t alerted to the crash until hours later, said Whitney Coonrod, public information officer for the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office.

Carbon County sheriff deputies and the county ambulance services were dispatched to the accident around 11:30 a.m. Saturday where they met AJ Price, 19, from Price, who told them he and his friend had rolled his Dodge truck some time between 10 and 11 p.m. the night before, ejecting both of them from the vehicle. Neither of the men were wearing seatbelts.

Deputies found Dalton Van, 19, from Roosevelt, dead from injuries caused by the accident.

Price had crawled several hundred feet to a road to try to get help, Coonrod said. A passerby found Price and had to trek to the top of a mountain in order to get cell service to call for help.

Price had visible injuries, and investigators found the truck had rolled several hundred feet down the mountain, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office said. He was transported to Castleview Hospital then to Utah Valley Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

No citations have been issued and the accident is under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
