THE NEIGHBORHOOD THAT WAS — I always assumed I had a bit of a dark streak in me. It’s not something I’m proud of, but something that was there lurking under the surface.
When I was a child, I loved building cities in our sandbox: buildings, homes, cars and so many G.I. Joe's. I would then get a bucket of water and pour it over the mini-metropolis and watch it all wash away. I know, kind of dark.
I haven't done that in ages (I mean at least like three years), but I've always worried I had a little more evil in me than I realized. That changed today when I saw this video, because it’s kind of terrifying and I am so glad no one was hurt.
The video comes from Norway, where multiple homes are carried out to sea due to what is called a quick clay slide. The slides are common in northern countries like Norway, Canada and Russia. According to the YouTube description, no injuries or deaths were reported from the slide because the residents had enough warning to get to safety. Apparently, one dog was swept out to sea, but the little fighter managed to swim back to shore all on its own.
Jan Egil Bakkeby took the video when he got to higher ground. "I had just made two sandwiches when I heard creaking. At first I thought there was someone in the attic, but then I looked out the window and saw the power lines ripping and the ground moving,'" Bakkeby said in the YouTube description.
Thankfully, he had insurance on his holiday cottage — and I hope he managed to get those sandwiches out as well. That's a commodity in my home.
As you watch the video I think you'll find yourself in a similar state as me; even Bakkeby was to a certain extent speechless. It's hard to fathom what you're seeing. It's incredible to watch, and people unfortunately lost their homes and belongings, but it seems a miracle no one was hurt.
I was so happy about that because it means a lot of people are safe and well and I'm not as evil as I thought. Not like the shenanigans in my sandbox.
