KAMAS — An 11-year-old boy who died on Wednesday in an accidental shooting was identified on Thursday by Summit County Sheriff's officials.
Cash Cover died after suffering a gunshot wound to his chest. Authorities originally reported the boy was 10 years old but said Thursday he was 11.
Cash and his older brother had permission to play with a BB gun on the property, officials said.
The brothers and their mother were outside just before the accident when the two boys went inside the home and accessed a handgun, not a BB gun, from a bedroom.
Shortly thereafter, their mother heard screaming from inside the home. When she went inside, she found Cash with a gunshot wound.
Deputies arrived and performed lifesaving efforts on Cash, but his injuries were too severe and the young boy died.
"One deputy, who is a paramedic, tried his best to save the life of Cash," a statement from the sheriff's office reads.
Cash's wound was not self-inflicted, family members said in a statement.
The family also asked for privacy as they mourn the loss of their young son and said they are grateful to first responders who "did everything they could to help him."
