FRUITLAND, Duchesne County — An Amber Alert issued Wednesday evening for an abducted 4-year-old boy was canceled shortly after it was sent and officials said the boy is safe.

The alert was issued about 6:25 p.m. and canceled by 7 p.m.

The boy was found safely sleeping in the corner of an outbuilding on his family’s property after more than 20 people had searched for him for about two hours.

Medics examined the boy and found him in good condition, Duchesne County Sheriff’s officials said.

The initial alert said the boy had been abducted out of Fruitland about 3 p.m. and police were searching for an unnamed person of interest, described as a white man driving a dark gray Nissan sedan.

The boy's family reported him missing, and deputies arrived about 30 minutes later. Deputies and detectives searched along Red Creek, which is near the family’s property, and a helicopter crew assisted in the search.

Duchesne County Sheriff Travis Tucker decided to issue the Amber Alert since crews had searched for hours and the boy had still not been found. Additionally, a family member reported seeing a dark gray Nissan pull into the property around the time the boy went missing.

“We’re grateful this turned out the way it did and that he’s safe,” Tucker said in a written statement.

Authorities originally said the person of interest had been found but later said the sheriff’s office was no longer looking for the dark gray Nissan sedan.
