MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Arthur has formed off the coast of Florida, making it the sixth straight year for a named storm to develop before the official June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season. A tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of North Carolina’s coast, from north of Surf City to Duck, including Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. It's expected to drop between 1 and 2 inches of rain Sunday night and Monday onto coastal North Carolina. Hurricane season officially starts June 1.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — An explosion in downtown Los Angeles has injured 10 firefighters, and more than 200 are trying to douse the blaze that spread to several buildings. The condition of the firefighters was not immediately known Saturday evening. Firefighters were initially called to East Boyd Street around 6:30 p.m. for a report of a fire at a one-story commercial building. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange said the firefighters entered the building, and there was nothing unusual until the explosion occurred. The department issued a “mayday” call and characterized the incident as a “major emergency.”
UNDATED (AP) — A person who attended a religious service on Mother’s Day in northern Caifornia has tested positive for the coronavirus, possibly exposing it to more than 180 members of a congregation. The church in Butte County, north of Sacramento, chose to open its doors despite rules banning gatherings of any size, county public health officials said in a statement Friday. Most people with the virus experience fever and cough for up to three weeks. Older adults and people with existing health problems can face severe illness, including pneumonia, and death. The vast majority recover.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Restaurants can reopen in New Orleans but must take reservations and limit the number of diners. Auto and horse racing tracks in New York can reopen without spectators. Officials cautiously eased more restrictions Saturday on eateries, shops and outdoor venues as they tried to restart economies without triggering a surge in new coronavirus infections. Public health experts warn that the pandemic could pick up again if precautions are not taken or officials move too quickly to get people back to work. Similar reopenings happened in many cities and countries around the world as infections decline.
BEIJING (AP) — A Chinese government-backed team plans to summit Mount Everest this week at a time when the world’s tallest peak has been closed to commercial climbers. State media say bad weather forced the team charged with measuring the mountain’s current height to retreat to base camp, but they have since taken up their former position higher on the mountain. Everest straddles the border of China and Nepal and both countries canceled spring climbing to prevent the coronavirus from spreading among expedition teams that typically live for weeks in tightly packed camps at high altitudes with little access to emergency medical help.
