WASHINGTON (AP) — Three members of the White House coronavirus task force, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, have placed themselves in quarantine after contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. Their concern about infection is another stark reminder that not even one of the nation’s most secure buildings is immune from the virus. Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and is nationally known for his simple and direct explanations about the coronavirus and the disease it causes. Also quarantining are the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Robert Redfield, and the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, Stephen Hahn.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — President Trump congratulated UFC for restarting the sports world after a nearly two-month hiatus. Trump’s taped message was played during ESPN’s broadcast of the UFC 249 undercard. The bouts took place inside a fan-free arena in Jacksonville. Trump says “get the sports leagues back. Let’s play. Do the social distancing and whatever else you have to do. We need sports. We want our sports back.” UFC 249 served as the first major sporting event to take place since the global pandemic shut down much of the country nearly eight weeks ago. It was originally scheduled for April 18.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea has reported 34 additional cases of the coronavirus amid a spate of infections linked to clubgoers. President Moon Jae-in is urging calm saying “there’s no reason to stand still out of fear” and the health system is able to respond. South Korean media report it's the first time the daily jump has marked above 30 in about a month. The mayor of Seoul has ordered more than 2,100 nightclubs, hostess bars and discos closed. China reported its first double-digit rise in new cases in 10 days on Sunday, saying 14 had been detected, 12 of them domestic infections and two from abroad. Australia's health minister has supported an EU motion for an independent investigation into the origins of COVID-19 in China.

APTOS, Calif. (AP) — A surfer has been killed in a shark attack off a Northern California beach. State park officials say the 26-year-old man was surfing off Manresa State Beach on the northern end of Monterey Bay Saturday when he was attacked by an unknown shark species. The victim’s name has not been released. Santa Cruz Sheriff’s deputies notified the man’s family. The water one mile north and south of the attack will be closed for five days. Signs have been posted warning beachgoers about the attack.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Mother's Day weekend got off to an unseasonably snowy start in areas of the Northeast thanks to the polar vortex. While Manhattan, Boston and many other coastal areas received only a few flakes, some higher elevation areas in northern New York and New England reported 9 inches or more. The spring snow and accompanying low temperatures came courtesy of the polar vortex, a batch of cold air being pulled down from the north. Massachusetts hadn't seen measurable snow in May since 2002, while in Manhattan's Central Park, the flakes tied a record set in 1977 for the latest snow.
