SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State and local governments across the United States have obtained about 30 million doses of a malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump to treat patients with the new coronavirus, despite warnings from doctors that more research is needed. The states acquired the medication as Trump regularly promoted it from the podium in White House briefings. The Associated Press' reporting shows at least 22 states and Washington, D.C., secured shipments of the drug, hydroxychloroquine. Sixteen of those states were won by Trump in 2016. Five of them, including North Carolina and Louisiana, are now led by Democratic governors.

ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A county official in northeastern Nevada says three people were killed in a plane crash in a remote area near the Utah line. Chief Deputy Coroner Nick Czegledi told the Elko Daily Free Press that a man, a woman and a boy were killed in the crash that occurred Friday night. Their identities weren’t released. Czegledi said the crash occurred in the Goshute Valley, an area about 20 miles west of the Nevada-Utah line. He said it appeared the plane that crashed was trying to land for unknown reasons and came down hard, nose down. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for information about the incident.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah has halted plans to buy 200,000 treatments of malaria drugs that have been widely touted by President Donald Trump for treating the new coronavirus despite warnings from doctors. Republican Gov. Gary Herbert said Friday the state is reviewing the circumstances around the planned $8 million purchase from local pharmacy Meds in Motion. A previous $800,000 purchase of hydroxychloroquine from the company is also being probed. An Associated Press review found Utah was one of a very few states that has spent money on the drug. Many others have received it through donations or from the federal stockpile. Meanwhile, Herbert said some restaurants closed to diners may begin reopening next week.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Trump administration panel is urging government intervention to rescue America's nuclear-fuel industries in a tough global marketplace. A task force appointed by President Donald Trump supported his proposed $1.5 billion taxpayer bailout for U.S.-mined uranium, and called Thursday for making it easier to mine on public lands, among other changes. The Trump task force says the moves are necessary to save U.S. nuclear industrial base “from the brink of collapse." Opponents call the proposal an industry bailout.
