SALT LAKE CITY — A man fleeing the scene of an aggravated assault in Fairmont Park crashed his car and critically injured a driver and left two others with minor injuries on Friday, according to Salt Lake City police.
The crash occurred about 6:15 p.m. at 3300 S. 900 East and also critically injured the man who was allegedly involved in the assault, police said.
According to Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Andrew Cluff, the man threatened two individuals with a knife near Fairmont Park before driving away at a high speed and later causing the crash.
His car was later spotted near 2100 S. Highland Drive and police tried to pull him over. He fled from the attempted traffic stop and police chose not to pursue him.
He fled southbound on 900 East and about one minute later, the call about the crash at 3300 S. 900 East came in.
The fleeing driver had run a red light through 3300 South and struck two eastbound vehicles, police said.
A pickup truck was pushed onto another car, critically injuring the truck’s driver and leaving the "extremely lucky" occupants of the car underneath with only minor injuries, police said.
The truck’s driver was in critical condition at St. Mark’s Hospital as of Friday night.
The man who allegedly caused the crash was in critical but stable condition at Intermountain Health Center, Cluff confirmed.
Salt Lake City police are investigating the alleged assault and Unified police are investigating the car crash. No arrests have been made as of Friday night.
