SEATTLE (AP) — Health officials in Washington state said Sunday night that a second person had died from the coronavirus and researchers said it may have been circulating for weeks undetected in the greater Seattle area. The man in his 70s died Saturday. On Friday health officials said a man in his 50s died of the virus. Both had underlying health conditions and both were being treated at a hospital in Kirkland, Washington. Washington state now has 12 confirmed cases. State and local authorities stepped up testing for the illness as the number of new cases grew nationwide, with new infections announced in California, Illinois, Rhode Island and New York.

PARIS (AP) — Coronavirus cases surged in Italy, and France closed the world-famous Louvre Museum as the epidemic that began in China sent fear rising across Western Europe, threatening its tourism industry. The virus has spread to more than 60 countries, and more than 3,000 people have died from the COVID-19 illness. New battle fronts have opened rapidly, deepening the sense of crisis that has already sent financial markets plummeting, emptied the streets in many cities and rewritten the routines of millions of people. China on Monday reported just 202 new cases, its lowest increase since January 21, raising its total past 80,000. South Korean cases surged beyond 4,200. The United States has reported two deaths, both in Washington state.

SELMA, Ala. (AP) — An emboldened Joe Biden is casting himself as the clear moderate alternative to polarizing progressive Bernie Sanders as the Democrats' shrinking presidential field races toward Super Tuesday. On Sunday, former small-city mayor Pete Buttigieg began informing campaign staff that he will exit the race. Biden pressed his case during a round of national television interviews that reflected a stark reality a day after his resounding primary victory in South Carolina. Biden is being forced to rely upon free media coverage because he is understaffed, underfunded and almost out of time as he fights to transform his sole win into a national movement.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that Ken Cuccinelli was unlawfully appointed to lead the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency and, as a result, lacks authority to give asylum seekers less time to prepare for initial screening interviews. U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss in Washington found Cuccinelli's appointment violated the Federal Vacancies Reform Act. The 1998 law governs who is eligible to lead federal agencies in an acting capacity. The ruling issued Sunday is at odds with President Donald Trump's penchant for temporary appointments, but its impact isn't immediately clear.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — The Orange County Register reports that Santa Ana police officers fatally shot a armed man Sunday afternoon inside a Catholic church. Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says the shooting took place shortly after the officers were flagged down at 4:20 p.m. and told someone inside Immaculate Heart of Mary Church had a gun. Bertagna says the officers found the man with a gun inside the church, and then the shooting took place. Bertagna says the man ran outside with the gun and collapsed on a nearby street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
