CEDAR CITY — Authorities have identified a man who died Monday after he pointed a gun at police officers, who then shot him, officials said.

James Aubrey Sr., 56, was killed after a Cedar City police officer fired three rounds at him, according to a Wednesday news release from the Iron County Sheriff's Office.

About 1 p.m. Monday, Cedar City police officers responded to a house near 820 South and Sunset Drive after a woman reported her husband was threatening her, her adult son and law enforcement, according to an Iron County Sheriff's Office news release.

Four officers arrived on scene, identified themselves and began talking with the family outside the home. They then "announced their presence into the home," and asked Aubrey to come forward with his hands visible, the news release states.

The man approached officers while pointing a handgun in their direction, and the officer opened fire.

Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts and medical personnel responded to the scene. Aubrey was pronounced dead on scene, the news release says.

No officers were injured in the incident, officials said. The officers involved in the incident are cooperating with the investigation, according to Iron County Sheriff’s Lt. Del Schlosser.

The officer who killed Aubrey is an 8-year veteran of law enforcement and has been placed on administrative leave per department policy, according to the news release. The Iron/Garfield/Beaver Critical Incident Task Force is investigating the incident.
