WILL SMITH REVISITS YOUNGER SELF FOR “GEMINI MAN”

LOS ANGLES (AP) — Will Smith had to contemplate what he was like as a younger man for the film “Gemini Man,” and he liked what he saw.

Smith says his younger self was naive, but “wildly aggressive” and “totally fearless.”

Smith recently turned 51, and he says on his 50th birthday he went on a quest to recapture that youthful courage.

“Gemini Man” is about a hit man who battles a 23-year-old version of himself. It opens in theaters today.

GEORGE CLINTON’S GRANDCHILDREN CARRY ON THE FUNK

LOS ANGELES (AP) — George Clinton’s legacy to his grandchildren may be Parliament-Funkadelic itself.

Clinton’s grandchildren now play with him in his band, along with some of the original band members. Clinton jokes he’s probably due for one of those reality shows to decide which grandchild will run the band when he leaves. He says all of them are “doing their utmost.”

Clinton says one good thing about P-Funk is it can do any style without anyone saying it’s wrong. As he puts it, “Nobody’s going to say, ‘That ain’t your bag,’ because we’ve done stupid that was SO stupid.”

JESSYE NORMAN’S HOMETOWN HONORS HER LIFE

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Renowned opera star Jessye Norman is being honored in her hometown with four days of celebrations and memorials.

Norman, who died Sept. 30 at 74, had hoped to live long enough to attend the renaming of the street outside the Jessye Norman School of the Arts, which she opened in 2003 to provide free fine arts education to disadvantaged children.

The ceremony on the newly renamed Jessye Norman Boulevard honors one of the few black opera singers to gain worldwide stardom.

A block away, another street honors another Augusta music giant — James Brown — whose daughter Deanne Brown Thomas attended a second day of public viewing Friday at an Augusta church.

Norman's funeral is scheduled Saturday and a benefit concert for the school follows Sunday.
