WASHINGTON (AP) — What had seemed like an imminent deal to end the war between the U.S. and the Taliban in Afghanistan has unraveled. President Donald Trump and officials of the insurgent group are blaming each other for the collapse of nearly a year of negotiations. Trump revealed this weekend that peace talks were to take place Sunday at the Camp David presidential retreat but that he canceled them in the wake of a car bombing in Kabul that killed one U.S. soldier and 11 other people.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma says it is still talking with state attorneys general, a day after some state law officials told colleagues that talks had reached an impasse. The company is being sued by more than 2,000 state, local and tribal governments over the toll of opioid painkillers. In an email obtained by The Associated Press on Saturday, two attorneys general said they expected the company to file for bankruptcy imminently.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Nadal has edged Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 to win his fourth U.S. Open title and 19th Grand Slam trophy overall. The second-seeded Nadal's victory Sunday moves him within one major championship of Roger Federer for the most by a man in tennis history.

TORONTO (AP) — The government in the Bahamas says the death toll from Hurricane Dorian has risen by one to 44. Health Minister Duane Sands on Sunday confirmed the toll in a WhatsApp message to The Associated Press. Officials have warned that the number of deaths is likely to rise as security forces and other teams search devastated areas of the northern Bahamas.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says searchers are scouring waters off Georgia for four missing crew members of a cargo ship that overturned near a port during a fire onboard the vessel. The Coast Guard said Sunday that 20 people were safely plucked from the stricken vessel in St. Simons Sound. The agency says a specialized team is preparing to check on the stability of the ship, The Golden Ray, as the search for the missing continues.
