MADRID (AP) — The German Foreign Ministry has confirmed that four of the seven people who died in a midair collision between a sightseeing helicopter and a small plane over the Spanish island of Mallorca were German citizens.
The ministry said Monday the four were passengers on the helicopter but did not identify them. Spanish media reported they were a couple and their two children. The helicopter's Italian pilot also was killed.
News reports say the two victims from the plane were Spaniards.
Local media reported the helicopter was on a sightseeing tour when the crash happened Sunday.
Authorities observed a minute of silence for the victims outside the regional government headquarters in Palma de Mallorca.
Spain's Defense Ministry says a military aircraft crashed into the sea off southeastern Spain on Monday.
