FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) — A developer who was renovating a building on a former U.S. Army base in Arkansas made a surprising discovery when he knocked down a wall and found a stash of empty Pabst Blue Ribbon cans and three dog tags belonging to service members.
Developer Lloyd Sumpter says he found one of the tag's owners, Ollie Shields, and mailed them to his home in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Fort Smith television station KFSM reports that Shields trained as a machine gun specialist from 1953 to 1954 at Fort Chaffee, about 110 miles (175 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock. His son, Raymond Shields, says items from his father's military service have all been lost, so the discovery was especially meaningful.
Sumpter says he's still searching for the owners of the other two tags.
