SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah teacher put on administrative leave for making a 9-year-old Catholic student wash off the Ash Wednesday cross from his forehead is apologizing. Fourth-grade teacher Moana Patterson said Monday that she hopes everyone can move forward and build understanding together. The boy's grandmother, Karen Fisher, said she doesn't want Patterson to lose her job, but believes more sensitivity training is needed.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A legislative proposal inspired by the shooting death of a University of Utah student that would have held gun owners civilly liable if they lend out a firearm used in a crime has hit another roadblock. The House Judiciary Committee voted unanimously not to send the proposal to the House after gun rights advocates testified that the proposal puts too much blame on the gun owner. Lauren McCluskey's ex-boyfriend borrowed the gun he used to kill her and himself.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah postal worker is accused of keeping hundreds of parcels for himself. KSL-TV in Salt Lake City reported Monday that 34-year-old Hector Armando Cortes was arrested late last week for investigation of felony mail theft. The U.S. Postal Service and law enforcement spent seven months looking into thefts in Salt Lake and Utah counties that started in July.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A bill that calls for Utah's required, semesterlong high school financial and economic literacy course to include units on socialism and communism has won final passage in the state Senate. The Deseret News reports the bill passed Friday after its sponsor, Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, said the state needs to teach students about political and economic systems that have repeatedly failed.
