WORLD 1-1 — What you are about to see is all hand drawn.
We need to make that clear up front because you will question it repeatedly. And even if you absorb this knowledge as fact with your entire being, you will still question it.
Watch the video then let’s talk. I’ll wait.
Illustrator and animator Kisaragi Hutae 6 is responsible for this genius work of art. She explained on Twitter that she made the 52-second video in three weeks using two notebooks. She drew the static background across notebook pages, but that’s where the traditional animation stops. She then cut moving parts — such as Mario, goombas, and breaking bricks — out of separate pieces of paper to create the stop-motion movement.
Based on the precision and intense detail, the three-week timeline itself is an incredible feat. But add the perfect sync of the stop-motion to the Super Mario Bros. theme song, and Mario goes to a whole new level.
Kisaragi uses her sweet sense of humor to animates with plastic Perler beads (like this little Kirby vignette), and she dabbles in other artistic mediums. Her twitter feed is basically one big, delightful homage to Nintendo.
