SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The U.S. government has charged a Utah man with a hate crime for his attack last year on three men authorities say he targeted because they were Mexican. Alan Dale Covington was indicted Wednesday on accusations that he attacked the men with a metal pole at a Salt Lake City tire shop and shouted that he wanted to "kill Mexicans." The victims survived but two of them suffered serious injuries. The incident occurred Nov. 27, 2018. The 50-year-old Covington doesn't have an attorney listed.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Actress Gwyneth Paltrow says a skier who accused her in a lawsuit of seriously injuring him at a Utah resort was actually the one that plowed into her from behind. Paltrow's attorney alleges in a counter claim filed Wednesday that the actress suffered a full "body blow" when Terry Sanderson smashed into her on a beginner run at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, on Feb. 26, 2016. Sanderson alleged in the lawsuit that Paltrow was skiing out of control and knocked him out.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State lawmakers are pressing pause on two gun measures, including a proposal inspired by the shooting death of University of Utah student Lauren McCluskey. Democratic sponsor Rep. Andrew Stoddard said Wednesday he's planning to keep working on the measure that would hold gun owners liable if they lend out a firearm that's used in a crime. It stalled out after hitting opposition from gun-rights advocates, but two other voluntary gun-safety measures supported by advocates advanced.

KANOSH, Utah (AP) — Seismologists say a moderate earthquake occurred early Wednesday morning in a mountainous area of south-central Utah. The University of Utah says the earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred in the Pavant Range about 5.3 miles (8.5 kilometers) south-southwest of Kanosh in Millard County and was felt in the communities of Fillmore, Monroe and Richfield.
