SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Holladay man who helped his father die by suicide has been sentenced to prison.
The Deseret News reports that a Salt Lake City judge Monday ordered 26-year-old Shane Paul Wright to serve between one and 15 years at the state prison.
Wright was initially charged with murder in the 2016 death of 53-year-old Bryan Wright but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Prosecutors say the younger Wright strangled his father with an extension cord and then smothered him with a pillow.
He then called 911 saying he had helped kill his father.
Judge Todd Shaughnessy noted Shane Wright's undiagnosed mental illness, lack of criminal history and his family's support.
The judge says he would likely get better treatment in prison for his own mental illness issues.
