The "t" in LGBT rights will be in the spotlight in 2019, as state lawmakers and courts across the country debate transgender rights and their impact on religious groups.

Religious freedom advocates and LGBT rights activists say they want to avoid the acrimonious battles that often accompanied the national debate over same-sex marriage, which are still ongoing, and find ways to work together. But the two groups remain divided on the value of religious exemptions to civil rights laws and many people of faith argue the concept of gender identity isn't compatible with their faith.
