WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he remains "ready and willing" to work with Democrats to pass a government spending bill even as he refuses to budge over funding for his long-promised border wall. Trump is tweeting "Let's get it done!" as the partial government shutdown continues with no end in sight. Trump's tweets on Wednesday came hours after he met with Republican and Democratic congressional leaders at the White House for a briefing on border security that, by all accounts, made zero progress.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is home alone no more, and he's more than eager to share a few thoughts. Trump on Wednesday convened a rambling Cabinet meeting on Day 12 of the government shutdown and invited reporters and cameras to follow along as he held forth for more than 90 minutes. He zigzagged from his demands for a southern border wall to his thoughts on Kanye West and his decision to pull troops out of Syria. It was Trump's first public appearance in nearly a week.

BEIJING (AP) — A Chinese spacecraft has made the first-ever landing on the far side of the moon. The official China Central Television says Thursday the lunar explorer Chang'e 4 had touched down at 10:26 a.m. The far side of the moon faces away from Earth and is relatively unexplored. It is also known as the dark side of the moon. The pioneering landing demonstrates China's growing ambitions as a space power.

LAUREL, Md. (AP) — At first, scientists said the fuzzy images showed something resembling a bowling pin. But better, closer pictures have arrived from a NASA spacecraft and a new consensus has emerged: the most distant celestial object ever explored looks like a snowman. Dubbed Ultima Thule, it is an elongated body about 20 miles long, consisting of two fused-together spheres. NASA scientist Jeff Moore says the two spheres formed when icy, pebble-size pieces coalesced in space billions of years ago.

DETROIT (AP) — As a staff sergeant stationed with the Marines in Iraq, Paul Whelan enjoyed fine cigars and showed an affinity for Russia _ even spending two weeks of military leave in Moscow and St. Petersburg instead of at home in the U.S. with family and friends. The 48-year-old Detroit-area man had an account on a Russian social media site, where he posted festive notes on the country's national holidays. Now, he's being held there on espionage allegations.
