13 Christmas movies you can watch on TV this week

SALT LAKE CITY — TV stations all across the country have started showing new and classic Christmas movies and specials in a countdown for Dec. 25.

Are you wanting to get into the Christmas spirit? Here’s a list of some of the highlights airing this week:

Tuesday, Dec. 4

“The Polar Express” will air on AMC at 6 p.m. The 2004 animated movie starring Tom Hanks is based on the 1985 book of the same name by author Chris Van Allsburg. It shows the adventurous journey of children who ride on a train to the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

“The Polar Express” is perfect for the whole family. From life-like animation to foot-tapping songs, everyone is bound to enjoy the movie.

Wednesday, Dec. 5

On Wednesday, there are two Christmas favorites airing: “Elf” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.”

Starring comedian Will Ferrell, “Elf” is the tale of a man who was raised as an elf in Santa’s workshop. When he finds out he is human, he goes to New York City to find his real father. It’s a heartwarming, laugh-out-loud film that you won’t want to miss.

“Elf” will air on AMC at 6 p.m.

Earlier in the day, you can also catch the 1970s classic, animated short film “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.” The movie focuses on how Kriss Kringle became Santa Claus. It will air on Freeform at 5:05 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 6

The 1965 Peanuts special “A Charlie Brown Christmas” will air on ABC at 7 p.m. Tune in to see Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the gang try to find the true meaning of Christmas.

The 1966 cartoon “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” will also air at 7 p.m. on TBS.

If you’re looking for a more heartfelt Christmas story, watch “It’s A Wonderful Life” at 9 p.m. on USA. The 1946 movie tells the story of George Bailey (James Stewart) and the way he comes to realize his blessings in life.

Friday, Dec. 7

You’ll shoot your eye out!

“A Christmas Story” will air at 8 and 10 p.m. on TBS. The 1983 movie is about young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) who wants nothing more than a Red Ryder range-model BB gun for Christmas. The comedy is a movie that will get you laughing and feeling nostalgic the whole way through.

For a more classic Christmas tale, tune in to Disney’s "A Christmas Carol” at 10:50 p.m. on FAM-W. The 2009 animated film stars Jim Carrey as the infamous Ebenezer Scrooge.

Saturday, Dec. 8

If you’re looking to spend the day on the couch with family watching Christmas movies, this day is for you.

First off is the 1954 classic “White Christmas,” starring Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. The movie is about a group of performers who decide to put on a big holiday show in honor of a retired army general. You’ll find yourself singing along to your favorite holiday songs and trying to keep up with all the colorful dance numbers.

“White Christmas” will air at 12:30 p.m. on AMC.

Next, you can catch the 1947 version of “Miracle on 34th Street” at 3:15 p.m. on AMC. The movie is about Macy’s Santa Claus defending himself in court as the “real Santa.”

Later in the evening, CBS will be airing the classic animated short films “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman” at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.

Sunday, Dec. 9

Finish off the week with the 2000 live-action remake of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

The comedy stars Jim Carrey as the infamous Grinch on his quest to steal Christmas from the residents of Whoville. The movie will air at 10 p.m. on FAM-W.
