SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers have passed an overhaul to a new voter-approved medical marijuana law under a compromise agreement that's sparked concern that it makes it too hard for patients to get the drug. Lawmakers approved the measure during a special on called Monday. The changes include blocking many marijuana edibles, preventing rural people from growing their own marijuana and narrowing the list of eligible medical conditions.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah regulators have ordered the owner of a coal mine near Price to address a highly flammable gas leaking into the atmosphere. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining says there's no point in UtahAmerican keeping holes known as gob vents open if the company has relinquished the leases or mined out the coal. The company says the vents pose a low risk of ignition and it might resume operations one day at the Centennial Mine.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Defeated Democratic congressional candidate Shireen Ghorbani is running to become the next mayor of Salt Lake County. Ghorbani declared her candidacy Saturday for the mayoral post being vacated by U.S. Rep.-elect Ben McAdams. Ghorbani works in communications at the University of Utah. She lost to Republican U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart in the midterm election. Once McAdams resigns to depart for Congress, the central committee of the Salt Lake County Democratic Party will nominate a replacement.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak at the University of Utah later this month. The university announced Monday that Biden will deliver a speech on Dec. 13 at the Salt Lake City campus. The 76-year-old Biden, spent recent weeks stumping for Democratic candidates before the November election and has said he expects to decide by early next year whether he'll seek the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination and challenge Republican Donald Trump.
