SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah ballot measure that would create an independent redistricting commission is virtually deadlocked after the latest batch of election results. Results released by Tuesday evening showed the proposition was trailing by a razor thin margin with about 909,000 votes counted. The seven-person commission would draw up maps for new congressional and state legislative districts after the 2020 census. The state Legislature would then look them over and decide whether to approve them.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The mother of a University of Utah track athlete who was fatally shot by a sex offender parolee she had briefly dated says the person who loaned him the gun should be prosecuted. Jill McCluskey made her comments in a tweet Tuesday. The 21-year-old Lauren McCluskey was killed on Oct. 22 by Melvin Rowland. University police chief Dale Brophy said previously that an acquaintance who let Rowland use a gun was cooperating with investigators and not facing charges.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The remains of a Utah mayor killed while serving in Afghanistan are returning to the state on Wednesday. Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor's body will be transported from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to a National Guard base in Salt Lake City on Wednesday afternoon. A public viewing will be held on Friday night at the Dee Events Center on the campus of Weber State University in Ogden. His funeral is planned for Saturday in the same location.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Mia Love has cut into Democratic challenger Ben McAdams' lead as vote-counting continued in the race that remains too close to call a week after Election Day. Results released Tuesday slice McAdams' lead from just less than 3 percentage points to a razor-thin margin of less than 1 percent. The Democratic Salt Lake County mayor remains ahead by about 1,400 votes, in a race where a total of about 230,000 ballots have been counted so far.
