SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Belgian tourist has died of apparent heat-related causes while hiking at a popular rock formation called "The Wave" near the Utah-Arizona border. Authorities say the 49-year-old was found dead Monday night after his 16-year-old son called his mom at a hotel to say his dad had become disoriented and needed help. Authorities say it's the first death since 2013 at the geological gem with swirls of red, orange and yellow that fold into a bowl.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man convicted of killing a Utah highway trooper in 1993 says he's sorry for being "a coward" when he fatally shot the officer during a highway pursuit. Jason Scott Pearson said Tuesday at a parole hearing at the Utah state prison that he was trying to flee and should have pulled over and taken responsibility. Utah Highway Patrol trooper Dennis "Dee" Lund was in pursuit of Pearson and a friend after they stole gas. Pearson was 18 at the time and is 43 now.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — Authorities say rafters on the Colorado River helped rescue the pilot of a small plane that crashed into the water near the Colorado-Utah border. The Mesa County Sheriff's Office in Colorado says the river rafters came upon the crash and took the 59-year-old pilot to safety Tuesday afternoon. Authorities say the man is injured but is conscious and breathing. The plane crashed into the river on stretch between Fruita, Colorado, and Westwater, Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a Salt Lake City man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a telemarketing scam. The Deseret News reported Tuesday that a federal judge also ordered 43-year-old Chad Gettel to pay more than $558,000 restitution. Gettel's sentence will run concurrent with a seven-year term he started serving last fall for a home loan modification scam. That scheme involved more than 10,000 victims nationwide who had more than $33 million in losses.
