LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada correctional officer suspected of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend has been found dead in Idaho.

Authorities said Wednesday that 41-year-old Christopher Gerard Caggiano died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found inside his car in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, after people reported it hadn't moved for days.

Police have said the onetime couple's two young children discovered the body of their mother, 32-year-old Cheri Louise Anaya of Bakersfield, California.

Police say she had been staying at Caggiano's Las Vegas home last week temporarily, and they argued before her death.

Caggiano was most recently assigned to the High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Las Vegas.

Police say the children were taken in by relatives.
