SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Survivors of the Florida high school shooting massacre have secured a new venue for their planned Utah gun reform town hall after a suburban movie theater revoked its earlier offer. The group said Thursday they would hold the weekend town hall at the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy. Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatres had previously pulled out of its contract to host the event, saying it was "escalating into a potentially contentious situation."
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A truck carrying radioactive dirt has caught fire in Utah. The North Tooele Fire District said the fire was extinguished Thursday morning and did not damage containers holding 82,000 pounds of radioactive waste or pose a threat to the public. Fire department spokesman Ryan Willden said the fire on Interstate-80 west of Salt Lake City was started by an electrical malfunction. He said the truck's tractor was destroyed but the driver was uninjured.
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A federal judge is barring release of certain visitor information for a man accused of killing his wife on an Alaska cruise last summer. U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess is prohibiting staff with the state Department of Corrections from releasing, without a court order, the name or title of any member of Kenneth Manzanares' legal team, as well as the date or type of the visit. Members of the legal team include lawyers, investigators and experts.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Eight protesters have been arrested at the Utah headquarters of a contractor operating immigrant detention centers. Centerville Police spokesman Lt. Zan Robison said roughly 25 protesters arrived at the Management and Training Corporation's offices before 8 a.m. but many left before final arrests were made. Robison says the protesters were arrested on suspicion of trespassing and potentially other charges. The protesters were calling for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement
