PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — Attorneys say a Virginia teen convicted of trying to kill a police officer has been found incompetent to stand trial in an unrelated robbery case.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that Judge William Moore Jr. on Monday postponed 16-year-old Will Patterson Jr.'s Tuesday sentencing hearing. Patterson was convicted in April of crimes including attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer for shooting Portsmouth Officer Angelina Baaklini in November. Baaklini had approached Patterson after recognizing him as a runaway.
Attorneys say psychologist Weare Zwemer plans to file his findings Tuesday. Prosecutors have argued Patterson is faking mental health issues. Patterson's defense plans to ask the court to set aside the jury's verdict in the shooting case as he probably wasn't competent in April if he's not competent now.
