SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert says a wildfire burning in the Utah mountains has destroyed 20-30 structures, including some homes and cabins. Authorities have evacuated 200 to 300 Utah homes because of the fire. The fire has grown to about 47 square miles (122 square kilometers) and is forcing families who planned to spend the Fourth of July relaxing at cabins to instead grapple with the realization they may lose their homes and cabins.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy is abruptly resigning this month after what he said was lack of communication from county leaders over a budget shortfall of up to $1 million. Tracy said at a County Commission meeting Tuesday he'd need to reduce the jail's capacity by 128 beds and lay off as many as 20 employees because of a budget gap. Commission Chairman Nathan Ivie said the sheriff's office can seek assistance to avoid major layoffs or close part of the jail.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has decided to enforce tougher rules on its predator control program to prevent criminal abuses and obtain better data. The Salt Lake Tribune reports starting this month, the agency will no longer accept scalps covered in maggots; taken from a coyote killed by someone else, including roadkills; and that are more than a year old, or are so decomposed or damaged that officials cannot confirm it came from a coyote.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some members of Congress say they'd like to see President Donald Trump turn to Capitol Hill for a Supreme Court nominee. Among those being suggested for the high court are Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Republican congressman Trey Gowdy of South Carolina. Recent history may be working against them. A veteran of Congress hasn't joined the court for nearly 70 years.
