SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) — Authorities in South Salt Lake say a man fatally shot by police after he killed an elderly woman and critically injured her husband was the woman's grandson. Police on Monday identified the man who held the couple hostage as 44-year-old Abe Martinez and his grandmother as 89-year-old Rose Martinez. The Deseret News reports Abe Martinez on Sunday told family members he was holding the couple hostage. Police say three officers "engaged" the suspect through a window. He was then shot and killed.

SANTAQUIN, Utah (AP) — Authorities in central Utah say a 16-year-old girl is dead after falling from a waterfall in a canyon. Utah County sheriff's office Sgt. Cannon says crews reached the teen and performed CPR, but were unable to revive her.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Authorities are searching for a man who allegedly stole a box containing several car keys from an outdoor recreation company, leaving as many as 30 people stranded. KSL-TV reported Provo Canyon Outfitters, which rents tubes and rafts to float on the Provo River, said Saturday a man had stolen a box containing car keys and identification cards of customers. Provo Canyon Outfitters requires customers to leave collateral in the box in exchange for renting equipment.

SMITHFIELD, Utah (AP) — Authorities in northern Utah are accusing a man of throwing sulfuric acid on a child. The Deseret News reports 32-year-old Smithfield resident Jason Keith Summers was arrested Friday on charges including child abuse and trespassing. The record shows Summers told investigators he threw "dirt" on the child, but authorities later discovered it was sulfuric acid.
