SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jurors began deliberations over whether three toddlers injured in a Utah day care were deliberately harmed by their baby sitter, or if a series of accidents were grouped and labeled a crime.
The Deseret News reports deliberations began Wednesday in the case against Murray day care owner Kami Kay Tollefson, who is charged with three counts of child abuse.
Tollefson's attorney, Scott Williams, claims unproven opinions from doctors who treated the children are insufficient to convict Tollefson.
Prosecutors say a 16-month-old boy was hit so hard by something in 2008 that his pancreas split while under Tollefson's care.
An 18-month-old boy was somehow deprived of oxygen a year later to the point that the blood vessels in his face burst.
And a year after that, a 13-month-old girl was hit in the head, leaving internal bleeding and detached retinas.
