NASHIVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former Nashville Mayor Megan Barry was a progressive, pro-business rising star for Democrats in the red state of Tennessee, but that political ascent has come crashing down.
After a wild, five-week freefall, Barry pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing thousands of city taxpayer dollars to continue an affair with her former bodyguard. She resigned.
Barry confessed to the extramarital relationship in late January. It began in spring 2016. She says it's since ended, but hasn't disclosed when.
Barry and her former bodyguard, Sgt. Robert Forrest, separately pleaded guilty to felony theft of taxpayer dollars. Barry agreed to reimburse the city $11,000 for Forrest's travel expenses while he was on personal time.
Forrest will return $45,000 authorities said he was paid while not actually performing security chief duties.
