Dying to Reach the Stars

Max McGregor / @wasatchmaximus

After an amazing hike down the Zion Narrows in mid-October, I drove up to Dixie National Forest, just outside of Cedar Breaks National Monument. It was a cold breezy night on Blowhard Mountain. I spent an hour wandering around in the dark near the weather domes and found this view of the Milky Way in a stand of dead pines. Utah is fortunate to have dark skies like these that are within a few hours drive of most cities. Most places in the US are not so lucky and too many people in our modern age have never seen the Milky Way with their own eyes.

Onward and Upward

DJ Evans / @djevansphotography

Like many people here in Utah, growing up with horses meant long rides, backpacking trips, herding cows, moving onward, and at night, looking upward. I took this photo with that in mind. This image accurately captures some of my favorite memories.

Pine Canyon

DJ Brooks / @djbrooksjr

The canyon is full of multiple varieties of deciduous trees that had begun to turn beautiful shades of pinkish-orange and red ahead of the change of colors of the aspens. There is a strip of these trees to the east of the road, the colors of which I thought would really pop if I could fly over to them. It turned out, the pictures looking straight down showed a perspective I wasn't expecting. This is what they must look like to a soaring bird, I thought.

Sunday Solitude at the Lake

Aaron Jensen / @ragnar23

A last-minute decision to head out for pictures left me very little time to set up or find a location. With a little bit of luck, I was able to enjoy the tail end of a beautiful sunset. As I pressed the shutter I thought of the amazing weekend adventures that led to this amazing moment captured forever.

In a World of Expectations, Be This Tree

Zackary Grant / @zsgrantphoto

As a filmmaker, I tend to look for unique angles and framing that bond an image together. When I spotted this small tree in Bryce Canyon I knew that I wanted to incorporate the two naturally formed arches in the background. To get the right angle, I ended up having to lie down on my back on the edge of the cliff.

Fall’s Color Palette

Cassell Archinuk / @cassyarchphotography

I’ve heard about Nebo Loop and wanted to see if it lived up to its reputation and it sure did! Every fall color was represented and a beautiful mountain backdrop to complete the amazing scenery.

Autumn Glory

Darlene Smith / @darlenesmithphotography

When I was a kid, my father taught me to fish in Duck Creek on Cedar Mountain. We would return for years to come. This is the place where my love of nature began.
