NEW YORK (AFX) - Mark Whitaker, editor of Washington Post Co.'s Newsweek magazine, is stepping down and will be replaced by managing editor Jon Meacham shortly after the holiday weekend, according to published reports.

Newsweek spokeswoman Jan Angilella said the magazine had no comment about the reports.

Both the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal said Whitaker will end his nearly eight-year reign as editor to take on a more strategic role with the company. He may focus more on online operations, according to the Journal.

Newsweek faced a barrage of bad publicity last year when it had to retract a report that claimed investigators had found evidence the Quran was desecrated by interrogators at the U.S. naval prison at Guantanamo Bay. The magazine adopted new policies for the use of anonymous sources after the incident.

Shares of the Washington Post gained $2.50 to $768 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be
