NEW YORK (AP) — The Latest on former U.S. Rep Michael Grimm running for his old seat (all times local):

1:40 p.m.

Former U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm says he's running to get back the congressional seat he resigned from after pleading guilty to federal tax evasion.

Grimm announced his campaign for the seat on Sunday at a rally on New York's Staten Island.

The Republican told the crowd of about 100 supporters that he would go to Washington and "have our president's back."

Grimm spoke out against his opponent for the Republican nomination for the seat, former prosecutor Dan Donovan. Donovan won it after Grimm's resignation in 2015.

Grimm was initially elected in 2010. He served eight months in prison on the tax evasion. He says the prosecution was politically driven.

Less than three years after leaving Congress and heading to prison for federal tax evasion, former U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm is hinting that he's going to run for his old job.

Grimm has said he's weighing a bid, and he has a campaign-style rally scheduled Sunday on New York's Staten Island.

If he runs, Grimm would seek to unseat fellow Republican Dan Donovan. The former prosecutor won it after Grimm resigned in 2015.

Initially elected in 2010, Grimm says his prosecution and eight-month prison term were politically driven and unfair. The Marine and former FBI agent casts himself as a political warrior ready to defend President Donald Trump's agenda against congressional Republicans.

Donovan's campaign says he's not worried about a challenge from Grimm.
