NEPHI, Utah (AP) — Two skydivers are dead after an apparent parachute malfunction in a tandem jump in central Utah. Police chief Michael Morgan in Nephi, Utah, said Friday the instructor and client were on a recreational jump run by the company Skydive the Wasatch. Police say one parachute failed and the second deployed but was unable to fully slow their descent Thursday evening. They were identified as 35-year-old instructor Serena Whelchel of California and 41-year-old client Wendi Gabaldon of Tooele, Utah.

TOOELE, Utah (AP) — Wildlife officials say a mountain lion found in a Utah backyard has been tranquilized and moved back into its natural habitat. KSL-TV reports the animal was captured Thursday after it settled down under a large tomato plant. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologist Tom Becker says the animal started toward a fence after being hit with a dart, but then stopped and fell asleep.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Medical marijuana backers are moving forward with their plan to ask Utah voters directly to pass a broad medical marijuana law on the ballot next year. The Utah Patients Coalition got state approval this week to start collecting the 113,143 signatures for the ballot initiative in November 2018.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah officials say eight bats found throughout the state have tested positives for rabies, and they are urging residents to take precautions by keeping their pet's and livestock's rabies vaccinations up to date. State Epidemiologist Dallin Peterson says the eight bats with rabies were captured in Sanpete, Davis, Salt, Cache and Utah counties. Fatalities are common after the host begins to show symptoms.
