PROVO, Utah (AP) — A candidate's onetime Democratic party membership is bringing heat to the Republican contest in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz. Provo mayor John Curtis defended himself Friday, saying his principles hadn't changed despite a past "fling with the dark side."

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Campers and outdoor enthusiasts are embracing a unique way to sleep under the stars on hybrid hammock-tents that are strung up between trees. Some of the portable treehouses were on display this week in Salt Lake City at the Outdoor Retailer show. They can be used anywhere a person can find trees, boulders or rock crevices sturdy enough to anchor them. Matt Powell, sports industry analyst with market research firm NPD Group, says they are generating growing demand at outdoor retail stores.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A neighbor of a 39-year-old Utah woman killed aboard an Alaska cruise says it's completely out of character for the woman's husband to be accused of such violence. Dana Nicholls told The Associated Press that he has lived near Kristy and Kenneth Manzanares for about 10 years and they appeared to be the perfect family. He says they were celebrating their wedding anniversary on the cruise this week. Kenneth Manzanares has been charged with murder.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A medical marijuana patient is asking the Nevada Supreme Court to reconsider its refusal to end mandatory state registration and fees for medical pot cards now that it's legal statewide for recreational use. The plaintiff, a migraine suffer identified only as John Doe, is accusing the state of illegally discriminating against medicinal pot users subject to stricter regulation than their recreational counterparts.
