SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah Department of Corrections official says an investigation into a rural county jail involves "serious, criminal allegations" that may stretch across multiple levels of the county sheriff's office.
Corrections Executive Director Rollin Cook said in a statement Friday that they have completed their investigation following allegations of inmate mistreatment at the Daggett County jail in February and the transfer of 80 inmates.
The Utah Attorney General's Office is expected to review the findings to see if charges are warranted.
Cook says the allegations involve unprofessional conduct, which may have put both inmates and the public in jeopardy. The department would not release additional information about the alleged crimes.
The new information comes two days after the announcement that two jail employees were fired and a jail commander resigned.
A spokeswoman for the Daggett County Sheriff's Office declined to comment on the allegations.
