This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Mike Newman's career path was clear from a young age. As a Boy Scout he discovered a great love for photography. At the age of 15, he sold his car and bought a camera so he could photograph a wedding.

Since that time, Mike has photographed more than 4,000 weddings in 13 states and three countries. He also owns one of the largest photography studios in the valley, Family Portrait Center and Event Imaging (also known as Breen/Newman Studio) in Holladay.

The Family Portrait Center and Event Imaging specializes in family portraits and weddings, but the studio also creates a fair amount of photos for business clients, high school seniors and special events. Mike tells me he has been invited to photograph high-profile visitors to Salt Lake City such as President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, Vice President Dick Cheney and the Dalai Lama.

In the last 10 years, the studio has gone completely digital, which has opened up a wide range of possibilities. Photos can be modified to add people who weren't there when the photo was taken and even to make people appear slimmer, a technique Mike calls "digital liposuction." The business recently moved into a new, larger studio that makes it possible to photograph groups of up to 100 people.

Mike says one of the distinguishing factors of his business is his years of experience. He has learned how to handle large groups of people and how to work with children to capture their unique personalities. Weddings don't make Mike nervous because of the large number he has photographed over the years. He is well versed in lighting, posing and moving clients from one pose to another quickly and efficiently.

Photography is a people-oriented business, and Mike says a truly talented photographer is not so much about taking photos but working with clients to capture their true essence. This is what he hopes to see Family Portrait Center and Event Imaging continue to do.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
