WEST JORDAN, Utah (AP) — A city councilman in Utah has resigned months after he was cited for leaving the scene of an accident.
The city of West Jordan says Jeff Haaga resigned from his councilman post Monday, citing "personal family matters."
Haaga pleaded guilty in October to failing to remain at the scene of an accident after he backed into a parked car while he appeared to be intoxicated.
Former mayors and city council members had called on him to resign.
Police say Haaga was leaving a bar when a group of men took away his keys, fearing he was intoxicated. Haaga used a spare set of keys to drive home.
On body camera video from when officers arrived at Haaga's home, he says he has "protection" as a government official.
The newspaper reports Haaga has not commented on the incident.
