WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have gingerly sidestepped their differences after their first meeting at the White House today. During their news conference, the two leaders tried to express their common bonds but showed little rapport. Their meetings included discussions on NATO, Islamic State, Afghanistan and Ukraine.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks ended little changed after a day of meandering between small gains and losses. Financial stocks lost ground as yields fell, cutting into lending profits. Capital One Financial fell 2.2 percent. The S&P fell 3 points or 0.1 percent to 2,378. The Dow fell 20 points, or 0.1 percent, to 20,915. The Nasdaq was unchanged at 5,901.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cold weather has killed half the blossoms on Washington's famous cherry trees just as they were getting to the peak of their bloom. National Park Service officials held a press conference today to describe the damage. Temperatures in the area dipped to 26 on Tuesday, 22 on Wednesday and 24 on Thursday.
