NEW YORK (AP) — A late-season snowstorm is disrupting everything from government operations to travel plans for NCAA tournament-bound teams. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management is allowing a 3-hour delayed arrival for non-emergency employees at federal offices in and around the nation's capital, or workers can take unscheduled leave. Villanova, the top overall seed in the men's NCAA Tournament, left Philadelphia yesterday afternoon for Buffalo, New York. Thousands of airline flights are canceled.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve begins a two-day meeting today which is expected to produce the third interest rate hike in 15 months amid signs of an improving economy. Approval is expected tomorrow, along with a signal that more hikes probably are coming. Fed watchers appear to be more buoyed by expectations for a vigorous economy than worried about whether slightly higher rates might slow growth.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas appears set today to execute a man for killing a father and infant son as part of a Christmas Eve 1987 rampage. Appeals for 61-year-old James Bigsby appear to be exhausted and no last-day legal attempts are expected.
BERLIN (AP) — Most flights to and from the German capital are canceled for a second day today because of a strike by ground staff at Berlin's two airports. The ver.di union, which is seeking improved pay for about 2,000 employees at several companies, is warning against using "strike-breakers" to process passengers and planes, saying it would make it impossible for it to announce future walkouts in advance.
BERLIN (AP) — Police in the German capital are appealing for witnesses to help find a cyclist who sprayed at least half a dozen women with liquid, injuring several, in the past three months. Berlin police say the attacks began Dec. 7 and in at least four cases, battery acid was sprayed at the women. All happened in the northeast part of the city. One woman suffered serious facial injuries.
