MEXICO CITY (AP) — Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly meet today with top Mexican officials, including President Enrique Pena Nieto. President Donald Trump sent the two to Mexico on a fence-mending mission. But the real-life fence Trump wants to build along the countries' border is complicating matters, as is his immigration crackdown.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It will fall to states and school districts to decide whether students can use restrooms in accordance with their expressed gender identity, or with their biological sex. The Trump administration has lifted Obama-era federal guidelines that Republicans had called an example of federal overreach. Transgender advocates are vowing to fight.

CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) — A few dozen people still occupying a sprawling encampment on federal land to protest construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline will have another chance to leave peacefully today. That's according to North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. Most of the protesters marched out of the area ahead of yesterday's deadline. Ten who refused to leave were arrested.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week. But claims remained at a low level consistent with a healthy job market. The Labor Department says 244,000 Americans applied for jobless aid last week. That's up 6,000 from the previous week. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell by 4,000 to 241,000, the lowest since July 1973.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Backed by a U.S.-led coalition, Iraqi forces have fought their way into a sprawling military base outside of Mosul and onto the grounds of the city's airport. They've taken control of the runway amid fierce exchanges of fire with Islamic State militants. The two-pronged advance is part of a major assault to drive Islamic State from the western half of Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city.
