OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Water levels at northern California's Lake Oroville are continuing to drop and stopping water from spilling over a big dam's potentially hazardous emergency spillway. Evacuations for at least 188,000 people living below the dam were ordered yesterday after officials warned the emergency spillway was in danger of failing and unleashing uncontrolled flood waters on towns below.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — A White House official and a senior Canadian government official say the U.S. and Canada plan to launch a new task force called the United States Canada Council for the Advancement of Women Business Leaders. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Donald Trump are participating today in a roundtable discussion about women in the work force. Trudeau will also meet with Trump to talk about trade and participate in a working lunch.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite complaints from Democrats, the Senate is expected to confirm Steven Mnuchin (mih-NOO'-chin) as President Donald Trump's treasury secretary this evening. Mnuchin is the former head of OneWest Bank, and Democrats accused him of failing to protect thousands of homeowners from unnecessary foreclosures.

PARIS (AP) — Rescue workers in France say four people have been killed in an avalanche in the French Alps. Five others survived. Officials in the town of Albertville says the group of nine had been skiing when the avalanche hit today. They were skiing in a popular area that has extensive slopes and stunning views.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — No Valentine's Day in Islamabad, Pakistan. A judge has banned the lover's holiday in the capital, saying such celebrations go against Islamic teachings. An official says the order has been sent to Pakistan's media regulator to ensure a blackout on any Valentine's Day promotions in print or electronic media.
