NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks fell today as investors grew nervous following President Donald Trump's order imposing a travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries. Energy companies, which have surged over the last year, took the biggest losses. Airlines skidded after Trump's move led to protests and disruption at airports and concerns about travel. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 122.65 points. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 13.79 points and the Nasdaq composite dropped 47.07 points.
NEW YORK (AP) — RushCard, the prepaid debit card company founded by hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, is being bought by rival Green Dot for $147 million. Green Dot says it will buy UniRush, the parent company of RushCard as well as the Rapid! payroll debit card. Simmons started RushCard in 2003 as one of the first prepaid cards to focus on minority customers and charge lower-than-average fees.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Environmental groups said in court today that the Tennessee Valley Authority is essentially storing toxic ash from an aging Tennessee coal-fired power plant in a colander, letting pollutants seep into the a major river in violation of the Clean Water Act. In the bench trial that began in federal court in Nashville, TVA responded that the Tennessee Clean Water Network and Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association can't prove the federal utility is polluting the water supply in violation of the law or its permits at the Gallatin Fossil Plant, 40 miles outside Nashville.
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's famous Frango chocolate brand is being sold to the city's most famous popcorn company. Department store chain Macy's Inc. announced today that it's selling Frango mints to Chicago-based Garrett Brands, the Oprah Winfrey favorite that owns Garrett Popcorn Shops. The companies didn't disclose the price. Macy's will still sell Frango chocolates at its locations across the country. The chocolates were a signature brand of Chicago's Marshall Field's department store, which Federated Department Stores purchased in 2005 and converted to Macy's.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal lawsuit accuses banking giant Wells Fargo of illegally denying student loans to young immigrants who are protected from deportation and allowed to work and study in the U.S. under a program created by former President Barack Obama. The suit in San Francisco says the young immigrants in the country illegally have Social Security numbers and documents that meet banking requirements for identification. But it says Wells Fargo denies them loans based on their citizenship status.
