SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Authorities in the Dominican Republic say Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura and former major leaguer Andy Marte (mar-TAY') both have died in separate traffic accidents. Royals vice president Mike Swanson confirmed the death of Ventura, a fan favorite who helped his team win the 2015 World Series title. He was 25.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Southeast is bracing for another round of severe weather, after storms killed 15 people in two states this weekend. The National Weather Service says southern Georgia, northern Florida and the corner of southeastern Alabama could face forceful tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail today. The threat is expected to extend southward into central Florida and northeastward into South Carolina this evening.
ATLANTA (AP) — The governor of Georgia has declared a state of emergency in seven counties that have suffered deaths, injuries and severe damage from weekend storms. Gov. Nathan Deal's office says the emergency declaration includes Brooks, Cook and Berrien counties in south-central Georgia near the Florida state line. That's where 11 people were killed in severe storms early today. Cook County Coroner Tim Purvis says seven people were killed when an apparent tornado "leveled" homes in a mobile home park near Adel.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Transportation officials in the nation's capital say more than a million trips were taken on the city's Metrorail system on the day of the Women's March on Washington, setting a Saturday record. On Friday, when President Donald Trump was inaugurated, Metro said just over 570,000 trips were taken on the rail system.
NEW YORK (AP) — The psychological thriller "Split" has blown away box-office expectations, taking the No. 1 spot with an estimated $40.2 million. The Universal Pictures release starring James McAvoy was made for less than $10 million. Opening in second place was the Vin Diesel action sequel "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage," with $20 million. Last weekend's top film, "Hidden Figures," slipped to third place with an estimated $16.3 million.
