WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has commuted the prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the Army intelligence officer who leaked scores of classified documents. Instead of facing 35 years, Manning will go free in May after serving more than six. Obama's move was panned by Manning's critics, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, who calls the commutation "just outrageous."
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin took a parting shot at the Obama administration today, accusing it of trying to undermine Donald Trump's legitimacy with fake allegations. In his first public remarks about unverified claims that Trump cavorted with prostitutes at a Moscow hotel, Putin dismissed those claims as "nonsense."
WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of House Democrats planning to boycott President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Friday has grown to about 50. Top Democrats like House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi will attend, however. None of the Senate's Democrats have said they'll skip the swearing-in ceremony.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors are accusing the widow of the Orlando nightclub gunman of knowing about the attack ahead of time and then hindering the criminal investigation. Noor Salman appeared nervous and bewildered in court a day after her arrest in California. Her husband, Omar Mateen, killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub last June before being killed by police.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say they've nabbed a suspect in the fatal shooting of an Orlando police officer. Orlando police tweeted tonight that 41-year-old Markeith Loyd is in custody, ending a manhunt that began Jan. 9 with the fatal shooting of Debra Clayton outside a Wal-Mart. Loyd was also wanted for questioning in the killing of his pregnant ex-girlfriend.
