DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — An Oxfam analysis released today underscores the stark gulf between the super-rich and everyone else. Presenting the data at the annual gathering of the global political and business elites in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, Oxfam says just eight men, from Bill Gates to Michael Bloomberg, own as much wealth as 3.6 billion people. It's urging leaders to do more than pay lip-service to the problem.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It's still cold in the central U.S., where a winter storm brought sleet and freezing rain to parts of the region over the last few days. More than 11,000 electric customers were initially without power in Oklahoma, nearly all in the northwestern part of the state. The storm, which is moving into Nebraska and Iowa, left highways in many states glazed over with ice.
NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump isn't letting critics slide. Hours after CIA chief John Brennan charged that Trump lacks a full understanding of the threat Moscow poses to the United States, Trump lashed out in a Sunday tweet, questioning whether the CIA director himself was "the leaker of fake news."
BERLIN (AP) — Germany's vice chancellor says threats by President-elect Donald Trump to put up tariffs of up to 35 percent on German automakers if they set up plants in Mexico instead of the U.S. and try to export cars to the U.S. from there would make "the American auto industry worse, weaker and more expensive." Sigmar Gabriel says the U.S. needs to build better cars instead.
KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Uganda's Ministry of Agriculture is warning of an imminent "catastrophe" after tests confirmed that avian flu is responsible for the mass deaths of wild birds on the shores of Lake Victoria. The species hit so far by the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or HPAI, include domestic ducks and chickens. The government is urging people not to eat birds and other wild animals that are found dead.
