WASHINGTON (AP) — A top aide to Donald Trump says actress Meryl Streep should have supported the president-elect instead of denouncing him from the stage of the Golden Globes. Kellyanne Conway told Fox News that she's "concerned that somebody with a platform like Meryl Streep's is inciting people's worst instincts." Streep criticized the president-elect's "performance" as a presidential candidate, especially his apparent mocking of a disabled New York Times reporter during the campaign. Trump has denied that. He fired back on Twitter that Streep, who backed Democrat Hillary Clinton, is an "over-rated" actress.

WASHINGTON (AP) — There's word of a confrontation at sea between the U.S. and Iran. According to U.S. defense officials, a U.S. Navy destroyer fired warning shots at Iranian patrol boats yesterday as they sped toward the destroyer at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The U.S. Navy occasionally has confrontations with Iranian naval forces in the Persian Gulf but they do not usually reach the point of prompting warning shots by the U.S.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening mostly lower on Wall Street, led by declines in energy companies and banks. Oil and gas companies had some of the biggest losses in early trading Monday as energy prices fell. Rig operator Transocean slumped 4 percent and Southwestern Energy fell 3.5 percent. Banks were also posting losses. Wells Fargo fell 1 percent.

MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) — Authorities say three people are dead and a Kentucky sheriff's deputy is wounded after a barricaded man fired at officers from a home where a fire was then set. State police say they were assisting the county sheriff's office on a welfare check yesterday in Morehead. They made contact with a man who retreated into the home and barricaded himself before opening fire and hitting a deputy, who wasn't seriously hurt. Police say after the gunfire, the home became engulfed in flames. Officers later found three bodies inside.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court won't hear an appeal from three sex trafficking victims who accuse advertising website Backpage.com of helping to promote the exploitation of children. The justices today left in place a lower court ruling that said federal law shields Backpage from liability because the site is just hosting content created by users.
