FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say the suspect who killed five people and wounded eight others at the Fort Lauderdale Airport today is an Army veteran who apparently has mental health problems. Officials say Esteban Santiago, of Anchorage, Alaska, had complained to the FBI that the government was controlling his mind. Santiago served in Iraq with the National Guard but was demoted and discharged last year for unsatisfactory performance. Witnesses say he fired randomly and reloaded a handgun while in a baggage claim area. The weapon had been checked as luggage.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An unclassified report released by U.S. intelligence agencies today concludes that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a hidden campaign to influence the election in favor of Donald Trump. The agencies said actions included the hacking of Democratic emails. The release came hours Trump was given a classified briefing. Trump, in a brief interview with The Associated Press, said he "learned a lot," but declined to say whether he accepted the assertion that Russia had meddled in the election on his behalf.

ATLANTA (AP) — Parts of some states in the Deep South and Southeast have salt trucks on duty because of a storm moving across the regions. Sleet and snow is falling in outlying suburbs northwest of Atlanta while rain and freezing rain brought slush to city streets. There has been frozen precipitation in portions of Mississippi and Alabama. States of emergency have been declared for parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Crews searching Lake Erie have found what may be human remains on a seat from a plane that was carrying six people when it disappeared near Cleveland over a week ago. A medical examiner is examining the remains. A Columbus, Ohio, businessman, his wife, their two teenage sons, a neighbor and the neighbor's teenage daughter were aboard the plane. The aircraft vanished shortly after takeoff Dec. 29 from Cleveland's lakeshore airport.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher have been laid to rest. The mother and daughter had a private joint funeral today at Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills the day after a memorial at their two neighboring houses. The cemetery is the resting place of many celebrities. Reynolds' son and Fisher's brother Todd Fisher said the funeral was "fitting and beautiful." He said he and other relatives will now plan a public memorial for the two women.
